KDP trim sizes

KDP offers 16 standard paperback trim sizes, from 5 × 8 in to A4, plus custom sizes, and 5 hardcover sizes. 6 × 9 in is the default. Each size has its own page limits for each ink and paper, and sizes wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in cost more to print.

How to choose a trim size

  • Novels and memoirs: 5 × 8, 5.25 × 8, 5.5 × 8.5 or 6 × 9 in on cream paper. Smaller trims mean more pages and a thicker spine for the same text.
  • Non-fiction and guides: 6 × 9 in, or 7 × 10 in when you have diagrams and tables.
  • Picture books: 8.5 × 8.5 or 8.25 × 8.25 in square, 8 × 10 in, or 8.25 × 6 in landscape, in premium color · white paper.
  • Coloring, activity and workbooks: 8.5 × 11 in, printed on white paper so pens and pencils work well.
  • Journals and planners: 6 × 9 in for carrying around, 8.5 × 11 in for desk planners.

Questions

What is the most common KDP trim size?

6 × 9 in is KDP's default and the most common size for novels and non-fiction in the US. 5.5 × 8.5 in and 5 × 8 in are popular for fiction; 8.5 × 11 in for coloring, activity and workbooks; 8.5 × 8.5 in for picture books.

Which trim sizes can be hardcover on KDP?

Only 5: 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, 6.14 × 9.21, 7 × 10, 8.25 × 11 in. Hardcovers need 75–550 pages and can't use a custom size.

Can I use a custom trim size on KDP?

Yes, for paperbacks: any size from 4 to 8.5 in wide and 6 to 11.69 in tall. Custom sizes aren't on KDP's Expanded Distribution list.

What counts as a large trim size?

A trim wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in. Large trims only change the printing cost: the per-page price and the flat fee are higher.

What size should a children's picture book be?

Square 8.5 × 8.5 in and 8.25 × 8.25 in are the classic picture-book sizes on KDP, with 8 × 10 in and the 8.25 × 6 in landscape as alternatives. All of them are paperback only.
