What KDP calls a low-content book
KDP defines low-content books as books with minimal or no content on the interior pages, generally repetitive and designed to be filled in. Its examples are notebooks, planners, diaries and journals, prompt journals, log books, coupon books, score cards, crafting templates and blank sheet music. Novels, non-fiction, puzzle books, coloring books, photography books, manuals, textbooks and children’s books are not low-content (KDP Help, Low-content Books, checked September 28, 2026).
ISBN and Look Inside
- A low-content book doesn’t need an ISBN: publish it without one, or with your own.
- It can’t use a free KDP ISBN.
- Without an ISBN, the Look Inside sample and the back cover thumbnail aren’t shown on Amazon; buying your own ISBN brings them back.
No Expanded Distribution
KDP doesn’t offer Expanded Distribution for low-content books, with or without an ISBN. Its distributors also don’t accept paperbacks with frequent lined or blank pages, such as journals, notebooks, planners, calendars, agendas and organizers (KDP Help, Expanded Distribution, checked September 28, 2026). The book is still sold on Amazon.

All of them are print only (paperback or hardcover): a book made to be written in needs paper, so there is no Kindle edition.
Guided and gratitude journals
Guided journals (about 1,491 credits for 120 pages) and gratitude journals (about 1,394 credits for 120 pages) get a different written prompt on each page. KDP lists “prompt journals” among its low-content examples and doesn’t say where a guided journal stops being one, so this is a judgment call. kdpbook.io sets these journals up as regular books, which can use a free KDP ISBN: that is our reading, explained in the guide on low-content vs medium-content books, not a KDP rule.
If you see your journal as a prompt journal, switch on “Low-content book” in its listing before you export. The export sheet then tells you to tick KDP’s low-content box, and the book can’t use a free KDP ISBN.
KDP interior generator
The interior pages are drawn by code, inside KDP’s margins for the trim and page count you pick:
- Planner & logbook: Low-content interiors: undated weekly planners, habit and health trackers and niche logbooks (reading, fitness, blood pressure).
- Lined notebook: A classic lined notebook or composition book: clean ruled pages with a date line, a 'This notebook belongs to' page and a cover designed for your niche (low-content).
- Sketchbook: A sketchbook for kids or adults: blank pages with a thin rounded frame on white paper, after a 'This sketchbook belongs to' page (low-content).
- Password book: An alphabetical password keeper: A to Z sections, each page headed by its letter with a table for website, username or email and password, in large print by default (low-content).
You choose the trim and the page count; the cover is designed for your theme and its spine is sized from the final page count.
What costs credits
The template pages cost no credits. What costs credits is the AI work around them. A default 120-page lined notebook comes to about 503 credits (about $5):
