Paste the text or upload it as a Word (.docx or .doc), PDF, Markdown (.md) or plain text (.txt) file. Your words stay as written: kdpbook.io only splits them into pages. Mark the page breaks yourself with a line of --- or “Page 3:”, or let it spread the story over the pages by word count, cutting only between sentences.
A plan for every page
Before anything is drawn, kdpbook.io writes a page plan: the words on each page, what the picture shows and where the text sits. Picture books use layouts such as image + text at bottom, image + text on top, full-bleed image, centered text. Afterwards you can edit the words and the layout of any page in the editor, with a live preview.
The same characters on every page
Each main character gets a reference sheet first: face, hair, clothes and colors. Every illustration is painted with those sheets as references, so the hero looks the same on the cover and on page 32. You can describe a character in words or upload a photo or drawing of them, and redraw any single picture later without touching the others.

Typesetting and KDP print files
The text is set in a font and size chosen for the reader’s age, inside KDP’s margins, in the text area of each page layout. The default picture book is 8.5 × 8.5 in, premium color · white paper, with bleed on 32 pages, so the art runs to the edge of the page after trimming. Formats: Paperback and Kindle eBook.
You get the interior PDF, the full-wrap cover PDF, a fixed-layout Kindle EPUB that keeps every page as designed, and a listing sheet with the title, description, keywords and AI-disclosure answers.
What illustrating a picture book costs
A default 32-page picture book with 14 illustrations comes to about 1,624 credits (about $16), including the story plan, the character sheets, the illustrations, the page layout and the cover. The exact estimate is shown before launch, and only what is produced is charged. New accounts get 2,000 free credits, enough for one such book; free-plan exports carry a “kdpbook.io preview” watermark and are not for sale, so selling it needs a paid plan.
Tell KDP the pictures are AI-generated
KDP asks you to declare AI-generated text, images and translations when you publish a book, or edit and republish it, and images include the cover (KDP Help, Content Guidelines, checked September 28, 2026). Pictures drawn by kdpbook.io are AI-generated even after you edit them; a story you wrote yourself is not. The export sheet lists the answers to give. Read the KDP AI disclosure guide.
