On Amazon.com, premium color costs $0.065 per page on regular trims and standard color $0.0255, so premium is about 2.5 times the price per page. Premium prints sharper, richer images on heavier paper and works from 24 pages; standard color is paperback only, needs at least 72 pages and suits long books with fewer images.
The difference at a glance
KDP offers two color inks for paperback interiors. Both print on white paper, follow the same formatting rules for the interior and the cover, and earn the same royalty rates. What changes is the paper, the print quality, the page range and the price.

Print quality and paper
KDP is open about the trade-off. To keep costs down, standard color paperbacks are printed on the same lighter paper as black-and-white books, on inkjet printers KDP describes as more efficient than toner-based printers. KDP says they have a matte finish and differ from premium color in sharpness and richness of color. Premium color is meant for books where image sharpness and clarity matter most.
- Image-heavy books gain the most from premium: full-page illustrations and photos are where sharpness and color richness show. A long book with a few charts or small spot illustrations next to the text gains less, which is the case KDP designed standard color for.
- Shoppers can’t tell which ink you picked: KDP’s product pages look the same for both, and KDP advises against publishing one edition in each ink.
- Order a proof. KDP recommends a proof copy before you publish to check that the ink and paper suit your book. For color books, it’s the only way to judge your art on paper.
What each costs
KDP’s formula is the same for every ink: fixed cost + page count × per-page cost. The per-page rate applies to every page, including text-only pages and blank pages, because KDP multiplies the whole page count. Premium color has one exception: from 24 to 40 pages it costs a flat fee.

On large trims, premium costs about 2 times as much per page as standard color. On regular trims the gap is wider: KDP’s own example, a 120-page regular-trim paperback, costs $4.06 in standard color and $8.80 in premium. Check any size and marketplace with the printing cost calculator.
Worked example: a 32-page picture book
A 32-page picture book in 8.5 × 8.5 in, the default trim of our picture book generator, sold on Amazon.com at $9.99:

- Premium is the only color option at this length. Because of the flat fee, 24, 32 and 40 pages all cost $4.20; at 42 pages the formula starts and the cost becomes $4.36.
- A 72-page standard color book in the same size would cost $3.89, less than the 32-page premium book. Padding a story to reach 72 pages isn’t a real option: KDP allows at most 4 blank pages in a row inside a book and 10 at the end, and filler pages make a weaker book.
- Black and white is cheaper, but only suits picture books drawn as line art or in grayscale.

Worked example: a 100-page coloring book
A 100-page coloring book in 8.5 × 11 in, the default size of our coloring book generator, on Amazon.com:

Coloring pages are black line art, so a coloring book is almost always a black-and-white book. Color only makes sense if you add colored reference pages (a finished example next to each design, or a color-by-number key), and then every page is billed at the color rate, including the 50 or so blank backs of single-sided designs. If you need color, standard color keeps the minimum price near $9.99; premium pushes it to $15.00.

Bleed, spine and hardcover
- Bleed isn’t a color feature. Any interior, including black and white, can bleed. Art that touches the edge extends 0.125 in past the trim, and the page grows by 0.125 in in width and 0.25 in in height. If one page bleeds, the whole file is set up with bleed. KDP says bleed doesn’t change the printing cost. Check sizes with the margins and bleed tool.
- Spine. Premium paper is thicker, so the spine is wider for the same page count: 0.469 in for 200 premium pages, against 0.45 in in standard color. Recalculate the cover if you change ink, with the cover size calculator.
- Hardcover offers premium color but not standard color, from 75 pages, with no flat fee for color: $5.65 + $0.08 per page on large trims on Amazon.com. A 76-page 8.25 × 11 in color hardcover costs $11.73 to print.
- The cover isn’t part of the choice. The ink option covers the interior pages; KDP’s cover guidelines ask for CMYK images whatever ink the pages use.
Which ink for which book
- Premium color: picture books, toddler books, comics, photo books, and any color book under 72 pages. In kdpbook it’s the default for baby & toddler book, picture book, ABC book, counting book, illustrated storybook, early reader, kids' fact book and comic & graphic novel.
- Standard color: books of 72 pages or more with photos, diagrams or spot illustrations where price matters, such as story collections, color workbooks and long cookbooks with only a few photos. KDP names cookbooks among premium color’s uses, so a photo-heavy cookbook belongs in premium. In kdpbook standard color is the default for bedtime story collection and cookbook.
- Black and white: novels, most non-fiction, coloring, puzzle and activity books, journals and manga. Only black-and-white books can use cream or groundwood paper.
Every kdpbook book type starts from a suitable ink and only offers the combinations KDP accepts for your trim and page count. You can change the default before the book is made.
Before you choose
- Decide before publishing. The ink is locked once the book is live. A different ink means a new book on your Bookshelf.
- Check Expanded Distribution if you want it. Premium color is eligible on 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, 6.14 × 9.21, 7 × 10, 8 × 10, 8.5 × 8.5, 8.5 × 11 in; standard color on more sizes. Books that need a high concentration of ink are among the content KDP says distributors don’t accept.
- Price it. Run your page count through the royalty calculator: below $9.99 on Amazon.com the royalty rate drops from 60% to 50%.
- Order a proof for your first color book in a new ink or trim.
