Page limits by ink and paper
KDP sets a minimum and a maximum page count for every combination of trim, binding, ink and paper. At 6.14 × 9.21 in:
| Ink and paper | Paperback pages | Hardcover pages | Spine per page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black & white · white paper | 24–828 | 75–550 | 0.002252 in |
| Black & white · cream paper | 24–776 | 75–550 | 0.0025 in |
| Black & white · groundwood paper | 24–812 | Not offered | 0.00235 in |
| Standard color · white paper | 72–600 | Not offered | 0.002252 in |
| Premium color · white paper | 24–828 | 75–550 | 0.002347 in |
KDP counts every page, blank ones included, and rounds an odd count up to the next even number, so the 75-page hardcover minimum is 76 pages in practice. The spine factor is the thickness of one page; the spine width calculator multiplies it by your page count.
At 6.14 × 9.21 in, black and white on white paper, standard color and premium color are eligible for Expanded Distribution (40% royalty through bookstores and libraries); black and white on cream paper and black and white on groundwood paper are not.
Eligibility by size and paper doesn’t guarantee acceptance. KDP’s Expanded Distribution page says its distributors don’t currently accept journals, notebooks, planners, coloring books or interiors that need a high concentration of ink, among other content, and it follows that list with a table of topics that includes activity books, puzzle books, workbooks and cookbooks.
Margins and text area at 6.14 × 9.21 in
KDP’s minimum inside margin (the gutter) grows with the page count. The top, bottom and outside margins must be at least 0.25 in, or 0.375 in when the interior has bleed. With those minimums, the text block can be this wide at 6.14 × 9.21 in:
| Pages | Minimum gutter | Max text width | With bleed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24–150 | 0.375 in (9.6 mm) | 5.515 in | 5.39 in |
| 151–300 | 0.5 in (12.7 mm) | 5.39 in | 5.265 in |
| 301–500 | 0.625 in (15.9 mm) | 5.265 in | 5.14 in |
| 501–700 | 0.75 in (19.1 mm) | 5.14 in | 5.015 in |
| 701–828 | 0.875 in (22.3 mm) | 5.015 in | 4.89 in |
The text block can be up to 8.71 in tall (8.46 in with bleed). These are KDP’s minimums; most book designers leave more room, especially at the gutter of thick books. See every margin to scale in margins and bleed.
Full-wrap cover size at 6.14 × 9.21 in
The cover is one PDF: back cover, spine and front cover side by side. Its width depends on the spine, so it changes with the page count and the paper.
Paperback
| Pages | Paper | Spine | Full cover (in) | Full cover (mm) | Spine text |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | B&W white | 0.225 in | 12.755 × 9.46 | 324 × 240.3 | Yes |
| 200 | B&W white | 0.45 in | 12.98 × 9.46 | 329.7 × 240.3 | Yes |
| 300 | B&W white | 0.676 in | 13.206 × 9.46 | 335.4 × 240.3 | Yes |
For 200 pages: 0.125 + 6.14 + 0.45 + 6.14 + 0.125 = 12.98 in wide, and 9.21 + 2 × 0.125 = 9.46 in tall. The bleed is trimmed off after printing.
Hardcover
| Pages | Paper | Spine | Full cover (in) | Full cover (mm) | Spine text |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | B&W white | 0.414 in | 14.269 × 10.627 | 362.4 × 269.9 | Yes |
| 200 | B&W white | 0.639 in | 14.494 × 10.627 | 368.2 × 269.9 | Yes |
| 300 | B&W white | 0.865 in | 14.719 × 10.627 | 373.9 × 269.9 | Yes |
A hardcover cover is larger than the page: each board is 5 mm wider and 6 mm taller than the trim, the spine adds 4.8 mm to the paper, and the art wraps 15 mm around every edge. Keep text out of the 10 mm hinge next to the spine.
KDP allows spine text from 79 pages. kdpbook also checks that the spine is wide enough for 7 pt text inside KDP's 0.0625 in spine margins, which in black and white on white paper takes 100 pages.

6.14 × 9.21 in is a large trim (wider than 6.12 in and taller than 9 in), so it prints at KDP's large-trim rate: a 300-page black-and-white paperback costs $6.10 to print on Amazon.com, against $4.60 at 6 × 9 in, a regular trim. That is $1.50 more per copy.
Other marketplaces use their own price tables: compare all of them in the printing cost calculator, and see what you earn per copy with the royalty calculator.
How many pages will your manuscript fill?
- An 80,000-word novel comes to about 230 pages at 6.14 × 9.21 in with 11 pt body text (242 at 6 × 9 in), for a 0.575 in spine on cream paper.
- A 50,000-word non-fiction guide comes to about 166 pages at 6.14 × 9.21 in with 11 pt body text (174 at 6 × 9 in), for a 0.374 in spine on white paper.

When to choose 6.14 × 9.21 in
- It is only 0.14 in wider and 0.21 in taller than 6 × 9 in, but that is enough to make it a large trim, so every copy costs more to print (see the comparison above).
- Imprint Digital's UK size guide lists Royal for textbooks, business and reference books. The larger page fits more words, so a long manuscript comes to slightly fewer pages than at 6 × 9 in.
