kdpbook.io vs ChatGPT for making a KDP book
Yes, you can make a KDP book with ChatGPT: it writes and draws, then you assemble the pages in Canva, Word or Kindle Create and apply KDP's trim, 0.125 in bleed, margins, spine width and cover size yourself. kdpbook.io does the same job as one project, from the chat to the interior PDF, full-wrap cover, Kindle eBook and listing.

What ChatGPT is
OpenAI's general-purpose assistant. For a book it can outline, write and revise the text, create images, and work with images and files you upload (with usage limits that depend on the plan). OpenAI's plan pages don't mention KDP print files, so the do-it-yourself path pairs it with a layout tool: Canva or Word for the interior and cover, Amazon's Kindle Create (PC or Mac) for the Kindle eBook. The same applies to other chat assistants.
Where it shines
- Nothing extra to pay if you already have a chat assistant; ChatGPT and Canva both have free plans.
- Full control over every word, image and page.
- Any format, genre or layout you can build yourself in a layout tool.
- The same subscription also helps with research, blurbs, emails and ads for the book.
ChatGPT pricing
- ChatGPT Free: unlimited everyday text chats; image generation and file uploads have separate usage limits.
- ChatGPT Go: a lower-cost plan with higher limits for images and file uploads (its price is shown on the ChatGPT pricing page).
- ChatGPT Plus: $20/month, billed monthly (no annual billing).
- For the layout, Canva has a free plan; Canva Pro is US$144/year for one person (US pricing, billed yearly).

Which one should you choose?
Choose ChatGPT if…
- You already pay for ChatGPT or another assistant and enjoy doing the layout yourself.
- You want total control over every page, or a format kdpbook.io doesn't offer.
- Your book is short and text-only, and you're comfortable in Word or Kindle Create.
Choose kdpbook.io if…
- You'd rather not compute trim, bleed, gutter, spine and cover size by hand for every book.
- Your book has illustrated characters that must look the same on every page.
- You want the print PDF, cover, Kindle eBook and listing from one project, with the cover resized when the page count changes.
Questions
Can I make a KDP book with ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT can write the text and draw the images, but KDP needs a print-ready interior file (a PDF if any page has bleed) and a full-wrap cover PDF, or a Kindle eBook file, which you build in a layout tool. You apply KDP's rules yourself: images of at least 300 DPI, 0.125 in bleed when art reaches the edge, a 0.375–0.875 in gutter depending on page count, and a spine computed from page count and paper: a 200-page 6 × 9 in book on white paper has a 0.45 in spine and a 12.7 × 9.25 in cover file.
Do I have to disclose AI on KDP if I use ChatGPT?
Yes, for AI-generated content. KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations when you publish or republish a book, even if you edited them substantially. Content you wrote yourself and only refined or brainstormed with AI counts as AI-assisted and doesn't need disclosure. kdpbook.io's listing sheet includes the disclosure answers.
Does kdpbook.io use OpenAI models?
Yes. Our privacy policy lists OpenAI as the provider that writes text, draws images and runs the planning chat. kdpbook.io adds the book around the model: the plan, character reference sheets, page layout, KDP rules applied by code, a preflight check and the export files. Think Lovable, but for books: you describe the book and get the files. kdpbook.io isn't affiliated with OpenAI or Lovable.
Which is cheaper?
If you already pay for ChatGPT and use Canva's free plan, the do-it-yourself path costs nothing extra, only your time. On kdpbook.io a 32-page picture book is estimated at about 1,624 credits (about $16), which the 2,000 free signup credits cover. Free-plan exports carry a watermark and aren't for sale; paid plans run $25–$99/month.
