Smell the rain

by Vaibhav Mehrotra

Mananya looks up at the dark, grey clouds and knows something is coming: the first rain. The wind whooshes, leaves rustle, birds chirp, and a cuckoo calls from the mango tree. Around her, a worm wriggles, frogs hop, and a cow grazes. What will the garden be like when the raindrops finally arrive?

Mananya runs to Papa, and together they step into the garden. They listen to the pitter-patter and discover the fresh, sweet smell rising from the soil. As the clouds drift away, there is more to notice: dripping leaves, wet birds flapping their wings, a gleaming mango tree, and a worm moving through damp earth. Then Mananya spots a big puddle—and the garden fills with joyful splashes and giggles.

Smell the rain is a gentle picture-book celebration of curiosity, nature, and a rainy-day adventure shared between Mananya and Papa. Its lively sounds and sensory details make it a playful read-aloud for preschoolers and families who enjoy discovering the little wonders outdoors.
