Comparison

kdpbook.io vs Atticus: an honest comparison

Atticus is a writing and formatting app sold for $147 once: it turns a manuscript you wrote into EPUB, PDF and DOCX files, but it doesn't write, illustrate or make the print cover. kdpbook.io writes and illustrates the book, or imports yours word for word, then builds the interior PDF, the full-wrap cover and the Kindle file.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Atticus if…

  • You wrote the book yourself and want hands-on control of every typographic detail.
  • You'd rather pay once than use credits or a subscription.
  • You want to write and format in the same app, including offline.
  • You need a DOCX export.

Choose kdpbook.io if…

  • You want the book written and illustrated, not only formatted.
  • You have a manuscript and want the full-wrap cover built from its final page count, in the same project.
  • You're making a picture book, comic or coloring book, or need a fixed-layout Kindle edition.
  • You want a KDP preflight and a listing sheet (title, description, 7 keywords, categories) with the files.

Questions

Is kdpbook.io an Atticus alternative?

For some books. Atticus formats a manuscript you wrote, for $147 once. kdpbook.io can also lay out your own text: import it for 19 of its 36 book types and it is used word for word, then kdpbook.io exports the interior PDF, a full-wrap cover sized from the final page count and a Kindle EPUB. If you only need formatting and want fine typographic control, Atticus is the simpler fit.

Does kdpbook.io rewrite an imported manuscript?

No. Imported text is split into chapters or pages and laid out; words, punctuation and line breaks inside paragraphs are kept. Reading the manuscript costs 3 credits per 1,000 words, and the book's estimate (plan, layout, cover art) is shown before you launch. If you wrote the text yourself and only the art is AI-made, KDP's content guidelines ask you to disclose AI-generated images, not AI-generated text.

Does Atticus make the paperback cover?

No. Its own guide says the print cover (back, spine and front) is a separate PDF that you don't create in Atticus. KDP's cover calculator, or kdpbook.io's free cover size calculator, gives the full-wrap size from the trim, paper and page count.
