The Door Behind Dylan’s Wall

by Blue Pen

Dylan draws doors wherever he can—even on a loose flap of wallpaper. But when a real door opens behind it, his slipper skitters through and vanishes into a wonderfully enormous world. Dylan follows with chalk in hand and one bare foot pattering along behind him.

There, a quilt hill is slowly folding itself up for a nap, and Dylan’s slipper is perched on top. He hurries along a stitched path, squeezes through a giant sock, and tries to climb a slippery satin slope. Each time the quilt folds, his slipper is carried farther away. With the last corner rising, can Dylan use his knack for drawing doors to reach his missing slipper before the hill folds it out of sight?

For preschoolers ages 3–5, this soft, playful adventure pairs a resourceful young hero with cozy, surprising scenery, lively sound effects, and a dash of suspense. Dylan’s determined efforts and imaginative idea make for an engaging read-aloud, with plenty to enjoy in the whooshes, slides, and soft flumps along the way.
