Dani and the Long River

by Mary B

A small fish. A very long river. A sound game that can’t always show the way.

Dani starts beside the Breg spring with one big wish: to touch a wave where the Danube meets the sea. As he follows the water, he guesses what he’ll hear around each bend, taps his bag, and listens. A bell surprises him at Ulm. A rumbling bridge surrounds him at Regensburg. Then the joining currents at Passau spin him off course, and the sound of a boat sends him the wrong way near Budapest.

Each stretch of the Danube brings a new sound—and a new choice. Dani learns to notice drifting leaves, follow the flow, save his strength, and look carefully when a dam seems to close the river’s path. But in the delta, reeds can block a way that once seemed promising. Can Dani find a route through the twists and currents and reach the wave he has been swimming toward?

With lively sound words, memorable river landmarks, and a determined little hero, this illustrated adventure invites early readers to travel along with Dani. It’s a warm read-aloud about curiosity, adapting when plans change, and paying attention to the world around you.
